Relationships and Love - Richmond, BC, Marriage Counseling

Love is the key factor in physical and emotional intimate relationships that last the long haul. It is relatively easy, for many, to have a physical and even very emotional bond with someone else for a while, but in order for the relationship to grow and support one another?s needs in the long term, both must be able to love one another.

The use of the word Love can cause some immediate concern because it is famously difficult to define, it is really useful if you think of it in terms of what love means to you and your partner in addition to some of the traditional hallmarks.

Not liking, not obsession, love is, according to most, that calm place in between. The deeply attached and not unhealthy dependence that builds over time. There are, of course, different kinds of love and different consequences to each down the road.

Relationships and Love

  • Passionate love is often described as infatuation and intense preoccupation with the partner. This is usually accompanied by strong sexual longing and feelings of exhilaration when reunited with the partner.
  • Companionate love does not have these highly potent characteristics, though it might have at the beginning. Attachment and a sense of mutual commitment with deep supportive bonds are the common ground in companionate love.

While many people say that they would always choose the passionate love over the companiate love, there are many others who acknowledge that finding a middle ground between the two takes hard work and commitment, which then creates a long term, lasting relationship
