Fitness classes more popular then ever, Campus Rec looks to ...

Students participated in more group fitness classes than ever, starting at the USF Campus Recreation Center last semester.

During the Fall 2011 semester, popular group fitness classes averaged 65 participants, more than the 55 students the classes are designed to accommodate. Kristen Keene, a senior majoring in studio art and English, who teaches a Hatha Yoga class at USF. said, ?On average I?ll get maybe like 30 people a class, whereas before I was getting maybe 15.?

During the first week of the spring semester, Campus Rec recorded nearly 1,700 students utilizing the group fitness program.

Group fitness is trending nationally as more local studios and fitness franchises open their doors to consumers, according to IDEA Health?and Fitness Association.

Campus Recreation Center Director Eric Hunter said that as the USF?Tampa campus moves from a commuter to traditional campus, the group fitness frenzy here grows.

?Any sort of dance-related class has really excelled in the last couple of years,? Group Fitness Coordinator Susan Hamilton said.??Some of the most successful classes today include Zumba, a Latin-based aerobic dance, as well as Pilloxing and Ripped.

Hunter said Zumba ?by far and away? is the most popular class.

In the past, women dominated group fitness classes. That changed this semester. Keene said, ?I?d have like three guys, maybe not even that many, but now one third of the class will be guys.?

Men generally utilize Campus Recreation more often than women ? 60% of daily users are male.

?Group fitness participation definitely has increased since our expansion opened in August,? Hamilton said.

The two-year long, $17 million renovations to Campus Rec were completed in August 2011. The expansion added 15,500 square feet and the center now has about 1,200 daily users.

Campus Recreation intends to expand more by adding a four-story fitness complex, a rock climbing wall, new locker rooms, a new pool and more. The final expansion will cost $68 million, according to Hunter.
