7 Steps to Instantly Better Writing
I?m worried. The publishing revolution is relentlessly moving forward. Everyone?s a publisher now, or can be. Are we witnessing the democratization of art and commerce, or ? as Andrew Keen puts it ? are we simply devolving into a meaningless cacophony of text? The only way through, to something meaningful, is mastery. Are you a great, persuasive writer who takes her craft seriously? Or are you only after more and more empty pageviews, at any cost? Ms. Jaksch offers a useful (starting) list for those of you seeking the former path.

//

How To Accomplish More By Doing Less
What if more hours at the desk do not necessarily equate to more (and better) work? If you?re creating original content to benefit and grow your business, the answer is obvious ? ?It?s not just the number of hours we sit at a desk that determines the value we generate.? This idea keeps coming up again and again, for good reason. Mr. Schwartz lays out the argument for less, as well as an encouraging, specific example of it playing out in his own professional life.

//

33 Questions to Ask Before Hitting ?Publish?
We all know that anything published to the Internet is published to the Internet ? forever. If you don?t yet know that little fact, well, now is a great time to start thinking twice about what you?re putting on Facebook, et al. In the context of creating serious content to build an audience, we find ourselves in a more subtle situation. Things like relevance, grammar, clarity, law, and formatting come into play. Commercially speaking, these elements are vital to a content plan that works. Allow Ms. Jones to take you through this 33-point content checklist, and allow yourself to absorb it, putting it to use every time you hit that publish button.

//

The Future of Storytelling
I utterly disagree with Mr. Ifeanyi that stories will/must evolve. He knows as well as I do that storytelling is an ancient art, the basic structure of which was established thousands of years ago, and will remain for thousands more. Performance and political ?artists? need not apply. Of course, the platforms on which our stories are told are obviously evolving, which is where I find the value in this article. Keep your eyes open. Watch. If an emerging platform can be useful to your goals, think deeply about how you can use it to tell your story. One good example of this is how Steve Martin is using Twitter and Facebook. He?s remade his act for the digital medium, embracing it, using entirely new platforms to tell the stories he?s always told.

How to Be a Better Procrastinator
Four bits of unconventional advice for those procrastinators who?ve given up hope. According to Mr. Perry, there is hope, and it can appear the moment you stop trying to stop procrastinating. Oh yes, my friends, you read that correctly.

Charles Bukowski on Committment to Your Craft
In honor of what would have been Mr. Bukowski?s 92nd birthday recently, a short passage from his novel Factotum. If you?ve ever questioned your calling as a writer, your calling to this bitch of a craft, soak this one in. You may disagree with the particulars of his directive, but I doubt you can dismiss the principle. Carry on.

Toronto mayor?s niece sparks outrage over ?don?t dress like a whore? tweet

Krista Ford, the niece of Toronto mayor Rob Ford, wants to protect women from sex offenders. It?s just that her approach has rubbed people the wrong way.

According to the Toronto Star, Ms. Ford posted a message on Twitter on Wednesday advising women to, ?Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don?t dress like a whore.?

More Related to this Story

Ms. Ford, the daughter of Toronto councillor Doug Ford (the mayor?s brother), reportedly published the tweet shortly after a Toronto police briefing that warned the public of a series of sexual assaults in the city.

The message has since been removed, but the firestorm has only just begun. Not only are people blasting Ms. Ford for apparently being uninformed about the legality of carrying mace (the Toronto Star points out that police consider it a prohibited weapon), her suggestion that the way a woman dresses attracts attackers has sparked outrage. Twitter users aren?t taking kindly to the notion that victims invite trouble.

?I?m for damned certain going to dress how I want and no one, Ford or otherwise, is going to change that,? one Twitter user said.

?Hey @kristaford, how about we put the blame for sexual assault where it belongs ? with the rapist, not the victim,? another wrote.

Others have pointed out an apparent hypocrisy in Ms. Ford?s comment. Ms. Ford, who describes herself as a promotional model and personal trainer, isn?t exactly known for dressing modestly, having played in her skivvies for a local lingerie football league team, the Toronto Triumph.

Her controversial tweet is more surprising still, given that similar advice from a Toronto police constable led to worldwide ?Slut Walk? protests more than a year ago. Constable Michael Sanguinetti sparked widespread anger and disbelief by telling a York University class that women should ?avoid dressing like sluts? to prevent sexual assaults. You?d think Ms. Ford would have learned from that.

FSBO ? Tips on how to Offer the Purchaser in your Inquiring Value ?

Get an Appraisal

Obtain a home appraisal from a certified appraiser. One recognized by lending companies and banks. Apparently enough, banks and home loan companies don?t lend revenue to homebuyers depending on the worth connected for the home by a genuine estate agent. That?s due to the fact they don?t take into consideration true estate brokers legitimate appraisers. And for great cause.

Most of the time, a true estate agent?s comparative market place analysis will not characterize the true marketplace worth of the household. As a result, protect your self by acquiring an appraisal performed by an expert appraiser, one that could give an correct, impartial appraisal of your household.

An appraiser calculates a property?s well worth applying a direct sales comparison method -based to the actual promoting, not asking cost, of equivalent properties inside your neighborhood.

Even a house owner can get a reasonably correct appraisal of their property. By performing just a little analysis, creating use of an online house appraisal services, and by gathering data from your interactive Dwelling Price Details Solutions out there in many main cities.

Set a Reasonable Inquiring Price

Without the need of possessing to think about a real estate agent?s percentage in the selling price, like a ?for sale by owner? house owner you have much more leeway when determining on an inquiring cost. Nonetheless, ensure that the cost you connect to your household is reasonable.

Even though you can set the price just a little higher compared to home appraisal if place or other elements in the residence are especially appealing, it truly is inside your ideal interest to be conservative when attaching an inquiring value on your home on the market by proprietor.

Most consumers can make a fair provide on a reasonably priced fsbo residence they like, but will avoid making any supply when the asking price is about too higher.

Buyers are normally advised by a purchaser agent or lawyer to bid below or in the appraised value. Even so, unless the marketplace is gradual inside your region, setting your asking value at 3 to 4% more than the appraised value of the dwelling won?t deter most severe purchasers.

Selling the Buyer on your Asking Price

Immediately after setting a good value on your house based mostly on the house appraisal, promote the buyer in your inquiring price. You can find advantages to shopping for a for sale by proprietor property.

First, the promoting process is much less complex for each the vendor along with the buyer. Discovering a buyer is normally quicker, too. A sizable % of FSBO houses that promote had been initially listed using a genuine estate agent, just before the property owner grew to become disappointed and took issues into their own palms.

In many instances, the asking value of a residence available for sale by owner might be dropped by 6 to 7% from what the actual estate agent had it detailed for, and nevertheless place far more revenue in homeowner?s pocket though saving the purchaser big bucks!

Enhance Your Chances of Creating a Rapid Sale

To enhance chances of making a fast sale, promote correctly. Advertising on the internet working with a resource for example Virtual Actual Estate Listings at vrel can save you hundreds, even 1000?s, of pounds in newspaper ads and also other types of marketing.

To get an acceptable, one-time fee, a complete web page advert comprehensive with colour photographs is made offered to intrigued parties around the clock, 7 days a week. And placing an inexpensive one or two line notice that consists of the on line ad?s Url in location newspapers will demonstrate one of the most cost-effective strategies to promote your fsbo house.

Rudisha wins Olympic 800 in world record time

LONDON (AP) ? On a night dominated by Usain Bolt, David Rudisha was determined to get a piece of the spotlight. The 23-year-old Kenyan ended up going one better.

He did what no one else, Bolt included, has been able to do: set a world record on the London Olympic track.

Rudisha had told his rivals in the 800 meters to be ready for a world record, and he delivered on his word, winning Thursday's final in 1 minute, 40.91 seconds, one-tenth of a second off the mark he set in 2010.

"I know people love Bolt," Rudisha said, when asked about being overshadowed by the sport's biggest star. "I'm happy for him, and I'm happy for me."

After crossing the finish, he flung up both arms to celebrate, then draped himself in a Kenyan flag and posed for photographs near the timing clock with "NEW WR" on it. He has been the dominant 800-meter runner for the last three years, setting the world record three times and losing just once since 2009. This, though, topped all that.

"It's something special to break the world record at the Olympics," Rudisha said.

Sebastian Coe, a middle-distance running great and head of the London organizing committee, wasn't in much doubt.

"That was simply an unbelievable performance," Coe said. "David Rudisha showed supreme physical and mental confidence to run like that in an Olympic final.

"Instead of just doing enough to win the race, he wanted to do something extraordinary and go for the world record as well. Rudisha's run will go down in history as one of the greatest Olympic victories."

Less than an hour later, Bolt won the 200 meters to clinch a repeat double in the Olympic sprints, backing up his 100-200 winning double in Beijing with another one in London.

Bolt, however, fell short of his own world record when he eased up in the final strides.

In the 800, 18-year-old Nigel Amos took silver in a world junior record time of 1:41.73 to give Botswana its first Olympic medal, and Timothy Kitum of Kenya got the bronze in 1:42.53.

Americans Duane Solomon and Nick Symmonds finished fourth and fifth, just ahead of 18-year-old Mohamed Aman of Ethiopia, the world indoor champion who handed Rudisha his only loss in three years last September.

Kitum, who finished more than 1 1/2 seconds behind his Kenyan teammate, said Rudisha had predicted a record.

"Yes, he's the greatest runner," Kitum said. "He told me he's going to run a world record today. He's the best."

Monsoon rains swamp Philippine capital

MANILA (Reuters) - Deadly torrential rains submerged much of the Philippine capital and surrounding areas on Tuesday, forcing nearly 270,000 people to flee their homes with more flooding expected in the north of the country as a tropical storm passes through the region, officials said.

Steady rains for the past 10 days, killing more than 50 people, are set to continue until Wednesday, the Philippines weather bureau said, fuelled by tropical storm "Haikui" in the Philippine Sea northeast of Taiwan. The storm is headed for China's Zhejiang province where more than 250,000 people have been evacuated ahead of expected landfall late on Wednesday.

"It's like Waterworld," said Benito Ramos, head of the Philippines national disaster agency, referring to a Hollywood movie about a flooded world.

Schools, financial markets, and public and private offices were ordered shut, including outsourcing firms whose corporate clients are mainly from the United States and Europe.

Disaster officials said over half of Manila was swamped by floods as high as three meters, worsened by a high tide and the release of water from dams in surrounding provinces.

President Benigno Aquino, in an emergency meeting briefly interrupted by a power failure at the main army base in Manila, ordered officials to exert maximum effort to aid residents in flooded areas. Officials have deployed army troops, police and emergency workers with rubber boats and amphibious trucks.

The monsoon rains, which dumped about 300 mm (12 inches) or three times the daily average of 80-100 mm from late Monday to Tuesday, were the heaviest in three years, the weather bureau said.

Typhoon Ketsana, which swamped 80 percent of the capital in 2009, aided a monsoon downpour of more than 450 mm (18 inches) in a 24-hour period.

MAJOR ROADS INUNDATED

Most major roads in Manila were inundated by knee- to waist-deep floodwaters. Some flights were delayed or canceled. Power, water and communications in flooded areas were disrupted.

Some of the affected residents were marooned on the roofs of their houses.

"There are about 5,000 people here," said Ester Ronabio, a public school teacher and volunteer in one of the temporary shelter areas in low-lying Marikina City in the eastern part of Manila. "We can't control the flow of people."

In a sign of the difficult scramble to move people to safety, Aquino appealed to an anti-graft court to release dozens of rubber boats held as evidence in a case against senior police officials for use in evacuation efforts.

Residents of Manila expressed concern the rains were a repeat of Typhoon Ketsana which killed more than 700 people and destroyed $1 billion worth of private and public property.

"The floods are so deep where we live, we don't want a repeat of Typhoon Ketsana a few years ago," Melanio David, a father of four, told Reuters. "We got scared so we evacuated last night."

NASA releases low-res video of Mars rover descent

This image taken by NASA's Curiosity shows what lies ahead for the rover -- its main science target, informally called Mount Sharp Monday, Aug. 6, 2012. The rover's shadow can be seen in the foreground, and the dark bands beyond are dunes. Rising up in the distance is the highest peak of Mount Sharp at a height of about 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers), taller than Mt. Whitney in California. The Curiosity team hopes to drive the rover to the mountain to investigate its lower layers, which scientists think hold clues to past environmental change. This image was captured by the rover's front left Hazard-Avoidance camera at full resolution shortly after it landed. It has not yet been linearized to remove the distorted appearance that results from its fisheye lens. (AP Photo/NASA/JPL-Caltech)

(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA's Curiosity rover on Monday transmitted a low-resolution video showing the last 2 1/2 minutes of its white-knuckle dive through the Mars atmosphere, giving Earthlings a sneak peek of a spacecraft landing on another world.

As thumbnails of the video flashed on a big screen on Monday, scientists and engineers at the NASA Jet Propulsion let out "oohs" and "aahs." The recording began with the protective heat shield falling away and ended with dust being kicked up as the rover was lowered by cables inside an ancient crater.

It was a sneak preview since it'll take some time before full-resolution frames are beamed back depending on other priorities.

The full video "will just be exquisite," said Michael Malin, the chief scientist of the instrument.

NASA celebrated the precision landing of a rover on Mars and marveled over the mission's flurry of photographs ? grainy, black-and-white images of Martian gravel, a mountain at sunset and, most exciting of all, the spacecraft's white-knuckle plunge through the red planet's atmosphere.

Curiosity, a roving laboratory the size of a compact car, landed right on target late Sunday night after an eight-month, 352-million-mile journey. It parked its six wheels about four miles from its ultimate science destination ? Mount Sharp rising from the floor of Gale Crater near the equator.

Extraordinary efforts were needed for the landing because the rover weighs one ton, and the thin Martian atmosphere offers little friction to slow a spacecraft down. Curiosity had to go from 13,000 mph to zero in seven minutes, unfurling a parachute, then firing rockets to brake. In a Hollywood-style finish, cables delicately lowered it to the ground at 2 mph.

At the end of what NASA called "seven minutes of terror," the vehicle settled into place almost perfectly flat in the crater it was aiming for.

"We have ended one phase of the mission much to our enjoyment," mission manager Mike Watkins said. "But another part has just begun."

The nuclear-powered Curiosity will dig into the Martian surface to analyze what's there and hunt for some of the molecular building blocks of life, including carbon.

It won't start moving for a couple of weeks, because all the systems on the $2.5 billion rover have to be checked out. Color photos and panoramas will start coming in the next few days.

But first NASA had to use tiny cameras designed to spot hazards in front of Curiosity's wheels. So early images of gravel and shadows abounded. The pictures were fuzzy, but scientists were delighted.

The photos show "a new Mars we have never seen before," Watkins said. "So every one of those pictures is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen."

In one of the photos from the close-to-the-ground hazard cameras, if you squinted and looked the right way, you could see "a silhouette of Mount Sharp in the setting sun," said an excited John Grotzinger, chief mission scientist from the California Institute of Technology.

A high-resolution camera on the orbiting 7-year-old Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, flying 211 miles directly above the plummeting Curiosity, snapped a photo of the rover dangling from its parachute about a minute from touchdown. The parachute's design can be made out in the photo.

"It's just mind-boggling to me," said Miguel San Martin, chief engineer for the landing team.

Curiosity is the heaviest piece of machinery NASA has landed on Mars, and the success gave the space agency confidence that it can unload equipment that astronauts may need in a future manned trip to the red planet.

The landing technique was hatched in 1999 in the wake of devastating back-to-back Mars spacecraft losses. Back then, engineers had no clue how to land super-heavy spacecraft. They brainstormed different possibilities, consulting Apollo-era engineers and pilots of heavy-lift helicopters.

"I think its engineering at its finest. What engineers do is they make the impossible possible," said former NASA chief technologist Bobby Braun. "This thing is elegant. People say it looks crazy. Each system was designed for a very specific function."

Because of budget constraints, NASA canceled its joint U.S.-European missions to Mars, scheduled for 2016 and 2018.

"When's the next lander on Mars? The answer to that is nobody knows," Bolden said in an interview with The Associated Press recently.

But if Curiosity finds something interesting, he said, it could spur the public and Congress to provide more money for more Martian exploration. No matter what, he said, Curiosity's mission will help NASA as it tries to send astronauts to Mars by the mid-2030s.

Letting You Increase Security: Hiring Emergency Locksmiths | 2leep ...

Protection is one of the most essential areas you must not ignore. Be certain to get enough protection in your home by hiring trusted locksmiths. These specialists could open, change, and set up locks, safes, and other security gadgets. Keep reading to learn further about 24 hour emergency locksmith and approaches they keep your home or office safe.

What are locksmiths?

These are individuals specializing in padlocks and other safety products. Originally, these professionals fabricate locks and keys from steel. Nevertheless, the rising requirements for safety and modernization of security triggered them to work with electronic locks that vary from key card entry systems to biometrics.

These experts, however, call for a lot of training to practice their trade. As there is no particular education requirements to be a locksmith, people who enter the trade need to possess a license. Several locksmith associations mandate their members to get certification prior to working. These experts also need a few equipment. Emergency locksmiths Perth have tools and additional gadgets for picking padlocks so that they can easily get into properties and automobiles if the need comes. They likewise have equipment for fabricating keys and encoding electronic locks on site.

What are the reasons for hiring locksmiths?

Raising protection is one of the main reasons for hiring these locks experts. Locksmiths may help adjust the bolts and padlocks in your house or office for extra protection against potential threats.
