Hospital programs offer help with fitness goals - Healthy Living

BY LINDLEY ESTES

Mary Washington Healthcare and Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center are trying to make New Year?s fitness resolutions a little easier to keep.

The health care providers are holding fitness challenges and classes beginning this month to inspire and educate people striving to reach fitness goals.

Mary Washington Healthcare began a four-part, free lecture series earlier this month. The talks are given by sports medicine professionals on injury prevention, nutrition, shoes, equipment and the benefits of cross training. The next lecture is Feb. 12.

Lisa Henry, director of marketing at Mary Washington Healthcare, said the series?called ?Get Off the Couch and Run??is geared toward helping novice runners and walkers get healthy and learn how to train for a 5K. The series is a lead-up to the Stafford Hospital 5K, which will be held April 13.?Henry said the classes give people a chance to check in during their training.

Through the lectures, Mary Washington hopes to reach a large group of people who are interested in fitness but probably wouldn?t attend classes are geared toward experienced runners.

?I hope we inspire people to make this something more than just a desire for a New Year?s resolution,? Henry said.

Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center will kick off its ?Lose Big. Win Big. Weight Loss Challenge? on Jan. 30. That?s the day of the challenge?s initial weigh-in.

The challenge spans 13 weeks and offers a cash prize as an incentive to lose weight.?The top three men and women?those who lose the largest percentage of weight by the final weigh-in on May 1?will each win a portion of the admission fees collected from participants.

During the weight loss challenge, there will be no group meetings, but the medical center will send out information, such as nutrition and exercise tips, to participants through email. The final weigh-in on May 1 will take place at the first farmers market of the season in the medical center?s parking lot.

?We want people to achieve their goals but achieve them in a healthy way,? said Kristin Thompson from Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.
