Sales back at J.C. Penney: Can they recover from their marketing fumble?

Only a year after swearing off sales, J.C. Penney is bringing them back. J.C. Penney used to run some 600 sales each year, but isn't saying how many are coming back.

This image provided by J.C. Penney shows the company's new advertising campaign. Penney is still embracing its ?fair and square? strategy as the cornerstone of its reinvention plan, and says the promotions will be targeted. But the latest tactic acknowledges that middle-income shoppers can't be weaned off sales.

The struggling department store chain this week will begin adding back some of the hundreds of sales it ditched last year in hopes of luring shoppers who were turned off when the discounts disappeared, CEO Ron Johnson told The Associated Press.

Penney also plans to add price tags or signs for more than half of its merchandise to show customers how much they're saving by shopping at the chain ? a strategy used by a few other retailers. For store-branded items such as Arizona, Penney will show comparison prices from competitors.

The reversal comes on the eve of the one-year anniversary of its original vow to almost completely get rid of the sales that Americans covet but that cut into a store's profits. The idea was to offer everyday low prices that customers could count on rather than the nearly 600 fleeting discounts, coupons and sales it once offered.

The bold plan has been closely watched by others in the retail industry, which commonly offers deep discounts to draw shoppers. But so far the experiment has served as a cautionary tale of how difficult it is to change shoppers' habits: Penney next month is expected to report its fourth consecutive quarter of big sales drops and net losses. After losing more than half of its value, Penney's stock is trading at about $19. And the company's credit ratings are in junk status.

Johnson, who rolled out the pricing plan shortly after taking the top job in November 2011, told The Associated Press the latest moves are not a "deviation" from his strategy but rather an "evolution."

"Our sales have gone backward a little more than we expected, but that doesn't change the vision or the strategy," said Johnson, who previously masterminded Apple Inc.'s retail stores and Target Corp.'s cheap chic fashion strategy. "We made changes and we learned an incredible amount. That is what's informing our tactics as we go forward."

But critics say Johnson is backpedaling. Walter Loeb, a New York-based retail consultant, said Johnson "is now realizing that he has to be more promotional to attract shoppers."

The pricing strategy has been a key part of Johnson's plan to reinvent Penney, which had failed to change with the times as its competitors updated their stores to make them cool places to shop. The plan includes adding hip new brands such as Joe Fresh and replacing racks of clothing with small shops-within-stores by 2015. But this isn't the first time the pricing strategy has been tweaked.

When it was rolled out in February 2012, the plan entailed permanently slashing prices on everything in the store by 40 percent. Penney decided to have just 12 month-long sales events on some merchandise. And there would be periodic clearance events throughout the year.

But the new pricing plan wasn't well received on Wall Street or Main Street, so six months after launching it, Johnson ditched the month-long sales, saying that they were too confusing to shoppers. Johnson said Penney has learned that people don't shop on a monthly basis, but rather they buy when they need something for say, back-to-school or during the winter holidays. And during those times, he said, they're looking for even more value.

"I still believe that the customer knows the right price, but they want help," he said.

Penney declined to say how many sales events it will offer going forward, citing competitive reasons. But the company said the figure will still be well below the nearly 600 it used to offer. The company said the discounts will vary depending on the sale. From Feb. 1 through Feb. 14, for instance, shoppers will get 20 percent off some jewelry for Valentine's Day. One example: half-carat diamond heart pendants on sale for $96, below Penny's?everyday price of $120.

Actor Burt Reynolds released from hospital after flu bout

(Reuters) - American actor Burt Reynolds has left a Florida hospital after a battle with the flu, a representative for the "Smokey and the Bandit" star said on Tuesday.

"Burt has been released from the hospital," said Reynolds' manager, Erik Kritzer.

Reynolds, 76, was admitted to an unidentified hospital last week with dehydration and was later placed in intensive care.

Reynolds is best known for his roles in 1970s films such as "Deliverance" and "The Longest Yard."

He won a Golden Globe award and scored an Oscar nomination for his role as a porn king in the 1997 film "Boogie Nights."

Blog Design for Killer Search Engine Optimization [INFOGRAPHIC ...

Blog Design for Killer Search Engine Optimization [INFOGRAPHIC] image Writing and Designing

For most businesses, implementation of a blog is a core component of a content marketing strategy that is designed to attract more and more visitors who can be educated through blog posts and converted into customers. While the creation of great, compelling content is a key aspect of that strategy, it?s also extremely important that your blog is optimized for search engines. The best blog post in the world is worth nothing if no one knows about it and can?t find it!

I recently found an infograph entitled ?Blog Design for Killer Search Engine Optimization? which did an outstanding job of covering the important points in making sure that your blog platform is as good as it can be. Unfortunately, the infograph itself was designed very poorly. You?ll find it below and I believe, like me, you will find it extremely hard to read due to the design and color choices. So, I decided to take the time to transcribe the points being made so that they can be more easily communicated.

01 Beauty Counts

Professional Design can reduce bounce rate, increase page views and earn more links.

Your design should also be carried through to your other platforms and social networks for consistent branding.

02 Search Box

Make it easy for visitors to search your site.

Don?t assume that visitors will automatically know where to go within your site to find what they?re looking for.

03 RSS is Alive!

Encourage RSS subscriptions with well-placed buttons.

There are approximately 7,784,292 websites using RSS, and 21% of the top 10,000 sites use RSS.

04 Breadcrumbs

Used by visitors for navigation and by search engines to help categorize your content.

Breadcrumbs are particularly useful if you have a website where visitors will click through several successive pages that carry them deep within your site. If your site really only has one or two levels of links, tags and categories may provide more intuitive structure.

05 Navigation

Use HTML and CSS to create sensible navigation. Avoid links that rely on javascript or Flash.

Flash should really be discouraged regardless of usage.

06 Images

Keep the sizes optimized to reduce page load times. Use alt text attributes and define width and height.

Utilize thumbnails and lightbox scripts whenever possible.

07 Keep it Above the Fold

Place important content where visitors can see it without scrolling.

For most users and desktop browsers, this means keeping within the top 768 pixels.

08 Link to Your Best Content

Create unique category or hub pages to feature your best posts.

.12 is the correlation between the # of internal links on a page and higher rankings.

09 Don?t Overdo Links

Too many [links will] dilute your link juice and may cause crawling issues. A limit of 100 per page is a good rule of thumb.

It?s also confusing and overwhelming to visitors! Avoid blogrolls and sidebar archives.

10 Watch Your Ad Space

Don?t let ads outweigh your unique content. Too many ads may hurt your rankings.

Again, it?s also overwhelming. If a visitor comes to your site and finds a site filled with ads, it may be difficult for them to view your content and find actual value in your website.

11 Encourage Comments

Comments build a sense of community, attract links and provide free long tail content.

Read more:?How To Manage and Encourage Comments

12 Sharing for Everyone

Make your content easy to share via social sites and email.

Sharing produces 10% of all internet traffic. 51% of content is shared on Facebook, 11% on Twitter and 7% by email.

13 Test for Speed

Reduce page bloat by optimizing images, combining CSS into external files and enabling caching.

02.90 Seconds is the median page load speed. Make sure your site loads at least that fast.

14 Crawl and Validate

Test your blog using online SEO tools to crawl and validate your site.

Work with your web developer to ensure that search engines (and visitors) won?t encounter any errors with your site.

15 Pick a Powerhouse Platform

Domain Authority Platform # of Linking Domains 99 wordpress.org 2,272,879 95 drupal.org 95,572 94 joomla.org 340,036 90 tumblr.com 379,443 90 posterous.com 155,630 88 moveabletype.com 15,494 87 b2evolution.net 13,287 85 typepad.com 381,982

The problem with this ranking is that is it trying to compare major blogging platforms based on the authority of the system?s domain name. However, Drupal and Joomla sites (and many WordPress sites), are self-hosted. That means that you are using your own domain name for your website, rather than?
byname.wordpress.org. Since we recommend that every?business use their own unique domain name for their website and blog, the authority of the system?s domain is irrelevant.

For self-hosted websites, Drupal is our primary recommendation. If you?re going to use a free blogging service, WordPress or Blogger are great choices.

Factors that May Cause SEO Problems

  • Pages that are all images without text
  • Links that rely on Javascript or Ajax
  • Heavy use of Flash
  • Frames
  • Content hidden behind form submissions
  • 100s of links
  • Hidden text

Here?s the original infograph:

Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8

The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 ($1,399 direct) is one of those lenses that photographers often think about adding to their arsenal, but are reluctant to do so as it isn't an everyday optic. The lens allows for tilt and shift movements that were commonplace in large format film cameras?of old, which often had a bellows system between the film holder and lens. This allowed photographers to carefully adjust the angle at which light captured by the lens hit the negative. But you needed a sturdy tripod?and film had to be loaded sheet-by-sheet into holders in total darkness. The move to small, portable cameras largely eliminated this movement capability, instead keeping the lens strictly parallel to the film plane. Specialized lenses with tilt and shift capability like the TS-E 90mm f/2.8 bring that ability back to a camera that you can carry in one hand?though you'll want probably still want to use a tripod.

Shifting the lens up or down has practical applications in architectural photography, and doesn't affect the plane of focus. It is useful for those times when you are photographing a tall object and can't get quite enough lift from your tripod to shoot it dead on?angling the head up results in keystone distortion, the same type you experience when craning your neck up to peer to the top of a tall building.

Tilting the lens changes the angle at which light hits the image sensor. This makes it possible to focus on a subject that lies on a diagonal plane, while still maintaining a fairly shallow depth of field, or to focus on only one object in a straight focal plane, blurring others that would normally also be in sharp focus. It's the same principle that creates the diorama-like miniature effect when shooting distant subjects?you can blur the background and foreground, leaving the middle of an image in sharp focus. This mimics the look of a macro lens shooting a miniature world, and is now often built into cameras as a specialized art filter.

If this is a capability that you feel that is missing from your camera bag, the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 is a good way to get started. It has a relatively long focal length?Canon makes similar lenses in 17mm, 24mm, and 45mm focal lengths if they are better suited for your photography. The 90mm lens measures 3.5 by 2.9 inches (HD), weighs in at a hefty 1.2 pounds, and uses 58mm filters?the front element does not rotate as you manually focus the lens, so using a polarizing filter is possible.

Imatest showed the lens to be incredibly sharp when mounted to the Canon EOS 6D. At f/2.8 it recorded 2,486 lines per picture height?a score that is much better than the 1,800 lines required for a sharp image. It's sharp across the frame, as the lens projects a much larger image circle than is required to cover a full-frame sensor in order to account for the tilt and shift movements. It peaks in resolution at f/5.6, where it records 2,770 lines. Distortion is a non-issue?our tests showed less than 0.2 percent pincushion distortion. Shifting the lens to its extreme does soften it a bit, but not terribly. At full shift the lens manages 2,262 lines at f/2.8, 2,424 lines at f/4, and 2,636 lines at f/5.6.

If you feel that you can justify the cost of the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 lens, the quality of images it captures will not disappoint you. The shift function is likely to appeal to architectural and landscape photographers who will use it to eliminate the keystone effect from their photos, and the tilt effect can be used for technical and artistic reasons alike.

Davos Needs Parents of Both Sexes - NYTimes.com

Reporting from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Nicholas Kristof describes a ?sea of men.? In ?She?s (Rarely) the Boss,? he writes that female participation at the ?annual conclave of the presumed powerful? is 17 percent. No word on how many of those 17 percent are mothers of young children, or how many of the 83 percent of male attendees are fathers who made sure to arrange for suitable child care before they came.

Why so few women? Mr. Kristof offers Sheryl Sandberg?s ?provocative? general answer to the question of why women are underrepresented in positions of power from her forthcoming book, ?Lean In?:

?We hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in. We internalize the negative messages we get throughout our lives, the messages that say it?s wrong to be outspoken, aggressive, more powerful than men. We lower our own expectations of what we can achieve. We continue to do the majority of the housework and child care. We compromise our career goals to make room for partners and children who may not even exist yet.?

There is something real and important in what she says, Mr. Kristof argues, citing his experiences of men asking questions more readily, along with a McKinsey survey (36 percent of male employees at major companies aspired to be top executives, compared with 18 percent of the women) and a study of Carnegie Mellon M.B.A. graduates in 2003 (57 percent of the men, but only 7 percent of the women, tried to negotiate a higher initial salary offer).

Neither Ms. Sandberg nor Mr. Kristof blames women for the numeric effect of their many failures and compromises, and both give significant weight to history, nature, social mores and the fact that, as Mr. Kristof puts it, ?the modern job was built for the distracted father.? But there is so much more to the story of why women are underrepresented in Davos, in boardrooms and in corporate executive roles.

In a complex, forthcoming study from the researchers Serena Chen at the University of California, Berkeley and Melissa Williams of Emory University, women who were asked to imagine a life in which they made most of the household decisions for a family consisting of a small child and a spouse showed less interest in achieving power in the workplace than women who imagined sharing those household decisions with a spouse, whereas men asked to imagine the same situations showed no change in their workplace ambitions.

A (male) writer, considering this data, produced a piece for The Huffington Post with the headline ?Working Moms Study: Household Managers Found to Have Less Ambition at Work? (The short line in the link? ?working-moms-less-likely-leaders?).

The researchers theorized that women were more likely to value household power, and therefore to feel less hypothetically in need of workplace power (unlike The Huffington Post writer, I find it hard to extrapolate from the imagined desires of research subjects to the real world), but the result was still yet another negative headline about women in the workplace.

This research seems to support Ms. Sandberg?s argument: even women imagining managing a household with a child ?lean back.? But we have to consider the extent to which that household (even the hypothetical household) pushes mothers back.

From birth to age 5 or 6, that single child will need someone present to care for her during every one of her waking and sleeping hours. That care has to be provided by a parent or paid for (and the parent who works at home caring for his or her child is ?paying? for child care in lost earnings elsewhere). Only when she?s old enough for public school does society support ? in the purely economic sense ? the idea that both of that child?s parents could work outside the home, and then one parent is expected (again, in the economic sense of a publicly provided alternative to the child being at home with the parent) to be present after 3 p.m.

Those are cold, hard economic facts (and please understand that they aren?t meant to reflect the very real emotional pleasures and even economic gains of having children). Men, who are accustomed to having women deal most fully with the consequences of that unavoidable requirement, may be more able to see it as less limiting. The fact that the men in the above hypothetical study weren?t daunted by the proposition of being wholly responsible for arranging that care may show an admirable level of ambition, but it may also show a poor grasp of reality.

The most salient line in Ms. Sandberg?s words was this one: ?We continue to do the majority of the housework and child care.? We ? as in, we women ? do, and that makes it difficult. But do we women continue to do the majority of the housework and child care because we want to? Because we have to? Because we?re expected to?

I?m not even sure we know the answer to that question. Regardless, until that greater household burden on women changes, the number of mothers in Davos won?t change. Two things could help: more fathers taking on real equal roles in child-rearing, and more structural support, not for women, but for families. Families who need paid sick leave. Families who need paternity and maternity leave. Families who need access to affordable, high-quality day care, and to birth control, and to preventative health care. (And unless you sprang from the brow of Zeus fully formed, those issues affect those without children as well.)

All of those are economic issues, and they certainly have an economic impact, in different ways, in different societies, worldwide. Lifting families from poverty requires all of those things. So they?ll probably be at least touched on in Davos. But will they be discussed in the same way as if 50 percent of the attendees were women, and if the other 50 percent were men who had always had, and expected to have, a gender-neutral equal role in family life?

No.

Running in the winter is (s)no(w) joke - Sports - The DePaulia - The ...

It?s 30 degrees outside and instead of getting a cup of hot chocolate, I?m on my way to the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center to go on my first winter run.

Inside the Ray, the sound of students talking hums in the background as I nervously stand and wait for the other runners to appear. Dressed in leggings, a black long-sleeve Under Armour, grey sweater and worn-out sneakers, I?m beginning to wonder if someone will think that I?m an imposter.

Just as I?m about to do some stretches to blend in, DePaul junior Christina Verrilli, 20, appears.

?I?m so excited,? she said. ?It?s been a long day and I?ve been looking forward to going on a run.?

I laugh and reply, ?That?s funny. I?ve been dreading this moment all day.?

Not long after, we see Katie Marquard, a DePaul alumni and the creator of Run with the Ray. We walk up to her and after she greets us she asks me what my pace is. I think for a moment and then reply, ?Not that fast ? more on the slow side.?

Next we are joined by two more runners: DePaul sophomore Anna Slotterback and Sarah Zweber, a local runner and Marquard?s friend.

?All right, it looks like no one else is coming,? said Marquard. ?We can get going.?

I pull on my hat and gloves, and take a deep breath as I follow the others through the door. As soon as I step outside, the icy wind hits my face and a shiver runs down my spine. I?m afraid that I won?t be able to move, but somehow I find myself running alongside Slotterback.

As we run down Webster, 19-year-old Slotterback talks to me about what it?s like making costumes at the theatre school, and before long we are turning on Lakewood and from there onto Dickens. We stop in front of Running Away Multi Sport, which is located at 2219 N. Clybourn Ave., and go inside to drink water. Marquard tells us that we are doing great and attaches a clip with flashing lights to each of us so that we will be more visible to drivers.

At this point I?m sure that we?ve run at least almost half of our run, but Marquard tells me that was only a little over half a mile and the full route is about four miles.

We leave the store and slowly split up: Verrilli, Slotterback and Zweber run ahead, and Marquard stays in the back with me. I am no longer cold, but burning hot. The challenge now is my aching legs and shortness of breath. Marquard asks me if I need to slow down and I say yes. I can still see the other girls in the distance, their flashing lights getting dimmer and dimmer in the dark shadows of the surrounding buildings.

Instead of going the full route, Marquard decides that she and I will run down Dickens to Oz Park, and from there up Webster back to the Ray. I am relieved and start to feel calmer.

As we run, an old man walking on the sidewalk moves out of way for us to pass, but I still run around him because I?m afraid of hitting him.

?Hey! Why didn?t you let me be a gentleman?? he says with a smile. I begin to laugh and I can?t believe that I?m actually enjoying running outside in the cold.

When the run is over, Marquard tells me that I ran 2.5 miles and gives me a high five. I feel like I cheated because the other runners ran more, but at the same time that?s the furthest I?ve ever run outside so I?m proud.

Run with the Ray is a club at DePaul that started this year and meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Marquard, an Ironman Triathlon finisher and employee of Running Away Multi Sport, said that she started Run with the Ray because she used to work at the Ray and wanted to get involved with the running community at DePaul.

Marquard said that runners don?t have to stop running outside in the winter, but there are some important tips that they should follow if they decide to: always wear reflective clothing; wear a light; if their run is longer than three miles, they should have hydration with them; if their run is two miles, they should stop somewhere in between to get water; wear hats and gloves; and they don?t need to necessarily wear a lot of layers, unless it?s windy.

?I enjoy running in the winter,? said Marquard. ?I?ve ran in 10 degrees and below. You actually burn more calories running in the cold.?

Slotterback and Verrilli, who both ran cross-country in high school, gave their reactions to the winter run.

?Running outside in the winter is tough,? said Verrilli. ?But I still like to keep my cardio and fitness up. I thoroughly enjoy running with others, so Run with the Ray was a perfect match.?

However, Verrilli said that she wouldn?t run below in snowy, below 20 degree conditions.

?It was my first time running in the winter,? said Slotterback. ?I am from San Francisco and it is always around 55 to 60 degrees, so it was quite the experience. But not as bad as I thought. I am a little scared to run in 15 degrees.?

Even though the turnout for the run was only five people, both Verrilli and Slotterback said that they plan to continue to come to Run with the Ray. As for me, I may have to think about it.

Learn Some Of The Simple Steps Of Home Improvement

Home improvement projects take a lot of effort to begin, whether you have a lot of knowledge and skill or not. Do not allow the TV home improvement shows fool you. Home improvements consist of more than just big jobs. Keep reading to see all of the potential things you can try out.

Basements generally have little, if any, natural light. To ensure your basement is more livable, plan your artificial lighting layout carefully. If you luck out, you have have high, protruding walls from ground level in your basement. If you do, windows may be installable and they would create natural lighting.

Even a small home improvement project can mean a big increase in your home's value. If you are considering the sale of your home, think about making one or two little improvements. For example, you can paint the interior and exterior of your home. Doing this simple job, which only costs a few hundred dollars, can add almost ,000 to the value of your home!

Make sure you have the gear you need before getting started on a new project. You always should procure a harness for your back if you are lifting heavy things, and also a helmet to protect you from falling objects.

You can dress up pillows in any room which can be a simple project. You can use old t-shirts with neat designs, band shirts, or even jeans to cut and sew into pillows. Personalize your teen's room and add some spice without spending a lot of money.

Purchasing brand new furniture is a very costly enterprise. Perhaps you can acquire some quirky pieces from estate sales and thrift shops. You might find real treasures amongst your used items, like furniture for instance. Some may require a bit of work, but with the right time invested, they can be a real asset to your household.

Here is a helpful tip that can help with the problem of water that is too hard. Purchase a water softener and filter your water through it. Through a variety of chemical processes, these appliances reduce water's hardness by extracting the magnesium and calcium that cause hard water. Water softeners that operate on chemical tablets are a popular and cost-effective choice. Choose the one that fits your needs.

When improving the exterior of your home, you can save money and add security by installing motion detecting lights. Motion sensing lights stay off until they detect motion in their path, and then they turn on automatically. This also means intruders will think twice about approaching any home with motion detection lights, in fear that they will be spotted.

When you are going to be doing home improvements that may inconvieience your neighbors, let them know ahead of time. Often, major renovation jobs will require trucks, heavy equipment or a dumpster, so you need to prepare for them. If you let your neighbors know ahead of time, they will most likely be less annoyed and inconvenienced.

As mentioned earlier, home improvement projects can benefit anyone that undertakes them. While it's good to be an expert at home improvements, knowing basic information is helpful. Just remember to use these tips on your next project.

Obama says struggling over whether to intervene in Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said he has been wrestling with the question whether a U.S. military intervention in Syria's 22-month-old civil war would help resolve the bloody conflict or make things worse.

In a pair of interviews, Obama responded to critics who say the United States has not been involved enough in Syria, where thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced according to U.N. officials. Transcripts of both interviews were released on Sunday.

The United States has called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, and has recognized an opposition coalition - but has stopped short of authorizing U.S. arming of rebels to overthrow Assad.

"In a situation like Syria, I have to ask: can we make a difference in that situation?" Obama said in an interview with The New Republic published on the magazine's website.

Obama said he has to weigh the benefit of a military intervention with the ability of the Pentagon to support troops still in Afghanistan, where the United States is withdrawing combat forces after a dozen years of war.

"Could it trigger even worse violence or the use of chemical weapons? What offers the best prospect of a stable post-Assad regime?

"And how do I weigh tens of thousands who've been killed in Syria versus the tens of thousands who are currently being killed in the Congo?" he said.

Obama's comments come as world leaders gathered in Davos, Switzerland, said they wished the United States were more engaged in geopolitical issues such as the conflicts in Syria and Mali, where France is attacking al Qaeda-affiliated militants.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Saturday that the United States will fly tankers to refuel French jet fighters, expanding U.S. involvement, which had been limited to sharing intelligence and providing airlift support.

In an interview with CBS television program "60 Minutes," Obama bristled when asked to respond to criticism that the United States has been reluctant to engage in foreign policy issues like the Syrian crisis.

Obama said his administration put U.S. warplanes into the international effort to oust Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and led a push to force Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak from office.

But in Syria, his administration wants to make sure U.S. action would not backfire, he said.

"We do nobody a service when we leap before we look, where we ... take on things without having thought through all the consequences of it," Obama told CBS.

"We are not going to be able to control every aspect of every transition and transformation" in conflicts around the world, he said. "Sometimes they're going to go sideways."

Stretching for Pain Relief | Natural Holistic Health Blog

Stretching for Pain Relief

Stretching your body?s muscles will actually enhance the healing process.

Next to breathing and breath work, stretching is the most beneficial exercises we can do for better health.

Done in tandem, breath work and stretching are the best support for easing aches, pain, tension, headaches, tight muscles and unexplained pain elsewhere in the body.

The different types of stretching

Just as there are different types of flexibility, there are also different types of stretching. Stretches are either dynamic (meaning they involve motion) or static (meaning they involve no motion).

Dynamic stretches affect dynamic flexibility and static stretches affect static flexibility (and dynamic flexibility to some degree).

When done properly, stretching can do more than just increase flexibility.

Benefits of stretching include:

  • ?enhanced physical fitness
  • ?enhanced ability to learn and perform skilled movements
  • ?increased mental and physical relaxation
  • ?enhanced development of body awareness
  • ?reduced risk of injury to joints, muscles, and tendons
  • ?reduced muscular soreness
  • ?reduced muscular tension
  • ?increased suppleness due to stimulation of the production of chemicals which, lubricate connective tissues
  • ?reduced severity of painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea) in females

Things to remember when beginning a stretching routine:

  • Wear comfortable clothes that won?t restrict body movement
  • Stretching should be pain free; don?t force the body into difficult positions
  • Move into each stretch slowly and avoid bouncing, which can actually tear muscles
  • Stretch on a clean, flat surface which is large enough to move freely
  • Hold stretches long enough (20-30 seconds) to allow muscles or joints to become loose
  • Repeat the stretch, generally 5 ? 10 times

The most effective stretches

One good over all stretch for your body is to lie on the floor and gently bring your knees up to your chest. Once there, put a little pressure on your knees with two hands.

Gently raise your head up toward the knees. Breath, in, out, in out?..slowly. Stretch, then relax. Repeat.

The effect of stretching on healing

Stretching your body?s muscles will actually enhance the healing process.

Long, slow static stretching will help to increase blood flow and circulation, eliminating stasis and help to warm and invigorate the muscles and in turn lubricate the ligaments and joints.

Stretching the whole body will help heal pain even if that pain is localized to one area. This is true because all areas of the body are connected through the fascia which is a sheath that covers and surrounds all of the musculature throughout the body. So, it?s important to stretch the whole body.

One of the best over all stretches is the Sun Salutation
