Google's Andy Rubin: Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we're not changing tablet app policies

Google's Andy Rubin Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we're not changing tablet app policies

We've got good news and bad news in equal measure for those pining after a Nexus 7 of their very own. If you're reluctant to spend that much hard-earned cash at the Google Play Store, Google's senior VP of mobile Andy Rubin has hinted to AllThingsD that the ASUS-made tablet could end up at retail stores before too long; the Play-only availability was just what Google had to mention at I/O. There could be some markup in other channels, given that Google is selling at what's very nearly wholesale prices. The bad news? Google won't be changing its attitude towards tablet-native apps anytime soon. Rubin sees Google Play content additions as key to driving Android tablet adoption, not the encouragement of tablet-specific app development -- he'd prefer the one-size-fits-all model. We'll see whether magazines and movie sales are enough to turn around so-so market share, but if you were hoping Rubin would address criticisms that Android tablet apps are just blown-up phone apps, you'll have to keep waiting.

Google modifies Maps, YouTube for Nexus 7 tablet

We've seen Google take Maps indoors, with interior schematics and even photos, but the Nexus 7 tablet brings a new twist to that familiar nav experience with 360-degree venue photos. Engineering Director Chris Yerga demonstrated the new feature within a local San Francisco bar called District, moving the device to show us how the compass and gyroscope work to provide 360-degree views based on your current direction and angle -- it's a pretty slick effect. There's also offline map viewing that expands the Google Labs map caching to include entire cities, which should definitely come in handy for navigating beyond your comfort zone (and mobile coverage area). Naturally, there's also an updated YouTube app, letting you take full advantage of that 7-inch display with video preview grids and HD playback, with a familiar Play store-like interface. Stay tuned for a closer look at these apps and more in our Nexus 7 hands-on.

Gunmen ram van into Microsoft's Greek headquarters

John Kolesidis / Reuters

A security guard talks on the telephone after an attack on Microsoft's Greek headquarters in the north of Athens on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com news services

ATHENS - Gunmen rammed a van packed with gas canisters into Microsoft's Greek headquarters in Athens and then set the vehicle on fire, causing damage but no injuries, police said on Wednesday.

At least two people wielding pistols and a machine gun kept security guards away as they carried out the attack at about 3:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday (9:45 p.m. ET Tuesday), police said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Authorities said no warning call had been made before the incident.

Arson attacks against banks, foreign firms and local politicians have become more frequent in Greece in recent years as the country battles soaring unemployment and struggles through a recession deepened by austerity policies imposed by foreign lenders.

Greece avoids 'Drachmageddon' but Europe debt crisis remains

The attacks usually occur late at night and rarely cause injuries.

Previous assaults have been mostly blamed on left-wing extremist groups, but police said it was too early to say who was behind Wednesday's attack.

$75,000 in damage
The van, which contained three inflammable gas canisters and five cans of gasoline, was completely destroyed while the ground floor of the U.S. software firm's office suffered heavy damage, police said.

Greece appeared to have avoided crashing out of the euro currency zone early Monday after political parties in favor of an international bailout deal won a slim election majority ? but the region's debt crisis showed no sign of abating. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Police said initial information indicated three people had been inside the van. They forced the two security guards at the building to leave before they reversed the van into the front entrance, smashing the door.

The two security guards were giving testimony to police.

Microsoft said it would shut its office in the city while it assessed the damage.

"Staff were told not to come to work today, and probably also tomorrow," the company's spokeswoman Lia Komninou said on Skai TV.

The fire brigade estimated the damage at about 60,000 euros ($75,000).

In February, a small bomb was left on an empty subway train in Athens. A far-left group fighting the austerity policies later claimed responsibility.

Spain's economic crisis turns middle-class families into illegal squatters

Growing public anger at the impact of the austerity measures was reflected in two parliamentary elections in May and June, in which parties opposed to the terms of the country's international bailout performed strongly.

Going indepth on Redskins' Helu

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Thursday's interview with Greg Cosell of NFL Films began with a discussion of Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray. Cosell's evaluation of Murray can be accessed at this link. I really wanted to get Cosell's take on a few young tailbacks who might be up and comers. Staying in the NFC East, we transitioned to another second-year runner in Washington's Roy Helu.

I opened by asking for Cosell's overall take on Helu, after watching his rookie-year game tape.

"It's funny that you mention him right after Murray, because I think Roy Helu is a guy who's a little more straight-linish than Murray," Cosell said. "But Helu is a big guy. He's about 220 pounds. I think he fits perfectly -- and I think most of us thought this when we watched him at Nebraska -- most of us thought he'd be a zone runner. A one-cut, downhill runner. And he's in the perfect scheme for that. He has very good burst, and very good speed. And he's a big man, so he's got some natural strength and power."?

Helu was a fourth-round draft pick two Aprils ago. He is not blessed with elite lateral movement skills, as Cosell noted. But Helu possesses a number of traits that may allow him to compensate, particularly in Redskins coach Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme.

"I think that he's a little upright as a runner," Cosell observed. "And I think that will always prevent him from being truly laterally explosive. If he was 20 pounds less, he would not be a good back in this league. But because he's 220 pounds and he has some natural strength, when he cuts downhill he can move the pile a little bit. So, I'm anxious to see him this year."

Helu finished his rookie season with 151 carries for 640 yards (4.24 YPC), and three all-purpose touchdowns, appearing in 15 games and starting five. He also caught 49 balls. While those are pretty good numbers for a first-year tailback, Cosell believes the jury is still out on Helu entering year two.

"Obviously he started and played over the course of last season. Later in the year, he had three consecutive 100-yard games. I think that scheme fits him perfectly. I think when the sample size is as small as it is for Helu, it's tough to tell whether his success resulted from his skill set or from the fact that Shanahan's run game has always produced success for backs. So I'm not certain yet whether I think he is going to be a really good back. Or whether he's Ryan Torain in the sense that he can have some good games and then we'll see where he goes."

Next up: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews.

Sounder win 1-0 in US Open Cup over Earthquakes

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:11 a.m. ET June 27, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - MLS rookie Cordell Cato scored in the first half as the Seattle Sounders, three-time defending tournament champions, beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 Tuesday night in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal.

Cato, 19, scooped up a long pass that skipped through San Jose's defense and launched an 8-yard shot from a sharp angle to the right of the Earthquakes' goal. The ball slid through the legs of keeper David Bingham in the 19th minute.

It was the first goal as a member of the Sounders for Cato, a Trinidadian youth international.

The Sounders made the early goal stand despite second-half pressure from San Jose, which owns the MLS's best record. Seattle extended its Open Cup unbeaten streak to 17 and will host Chivas USA in a tournament semifinal July 10.

San Jose poured players forward after inserting Chris Wondolowski, the MLS's leading scorer, in the 53rd minute, but never could find an equalizer.

Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez unleashed a drive from the top of the penalty are in the 94th minute that deflected out of bounds, but San Jose's calls for a hand ball went unheeded.

Andrew Weber, whose contract option was dropped by San Jose this winter, got the shutout in his first Open Cup action this year.

In a game that grew more testy in the second half, Quakes forward Alan Gordon received a red card in the final minutes.

??Treat Your Home to Furniture that Boasts Substance and Style (2012-06-27 23:02)

LOS ANGELES, June 27, 2012 -- There are some trends that are fleeting and ephemeral. One-hit-wonders rise and fall on the pop charts, replaced by the next piece of fluff. Political scandals dominate the airwaves, and then are quickly forgotten as some new and more titillating piece of gossip hits the front pages. Fashion crazes sweep the nation and then find themselves relegated to the dustbins of history as the "next big thing" appears on the horizon. That said, there are certain trends that, because they actually have substance and style, stand the test of time (not to mention the fickle taste of the masses).
