Don't let the age difference in your relationships deter you from having successful intergenerational relationships!
Our lives are built upon relationships and what more important relationship is there than that of the family. Our families can bring us the greatest joy in life.
Prince Andrew said, "I believe fundamentally that the family is the most important thing in life." (This quote comes from an article, which I love, by Rita Offen: "Family, the Most Important Thing in Life.")
The grandparent-grandchild relationship is vitally important! Grandparents can share family traditions and teach important family values differently - and sometimes more effectively - than parents can.
Conversely, if the intergenerational relationships between grandparent and grandchild are strong, the grandchildren might find it easier to confide in their grandparents, rather than their parents.
Grandparents! Do you live far from your grandchildren?These ideas will help any long-distance grandparents stay close to their grandchildren.

Successful family relationships aren't easy and they don?t happen automatically. They take work, dedication, love and commitment. And, if you?re not proactively building a relationship, it is automatically disintegrating.
To minimize the age difference in relationships between your family's oldest and youngest members, you need family bonding activities that appeal to a wide audience.
It's been my experience that some of the best family reunion fun and ideas come from specifically targeting either the very young or the very old. Focus on activities that will help establish identity, self worth and a sense of belonging. For example -
- Swap childhood stories (don't forget to have someone take notes!)
- Show photographs. Today's tech-savy children and teens often have NO idea what the world was like without computers and cell phones. What better way to tell than to actually show.
- Remember birthdays and anniversaries. Prepare cards and notes to send to relatives that aren't in attendance.
- Work on a project together, such as a Family Timeline
The family is both the fundamental unit of society as well as the root of culture. It represents a child?s initial source of unconditional love and acceptance and provides lifelong connectedness with others. The family is the first setting in which socialization takes place and where children learn to live with mutual respect for one another. A family is where a child learns to display affection, control his temper, and pick up his toys. Finally, a family is a perpetual source of encouragement, advocacy, assurance, and emotional refueling that empowers a child to venture with confidence into the greater world and to become all that he can be. |
Beyond the family reunion, there are many things you can do on a regular basis that will help strengthen intergenerational relationships, regardless of where you fit in the equation. For example -
- Eat meals together. And while you're eating, talk about grandparents' activities and interests.
- Celebrate Memorial Day. I grew up visiting the grave sites of deceased family members. But even if you can't visit their grave sites, you can at least revisit the names on your family tree.
- Create, share and celebrate annual traditions
- Send cards, post cards and notes in the mail. Email doesn't count!
- Remember Grandparent's Day. In the US, Grandparent's Day falls in September, on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
As in any relationship, you have to be fully committed and do your part of the work.
If all else fails, simply practice the golden rule - treat others as you would like to be treated ? and watch your family and successful intergenerational relationships bring greater joy and satisfaction to your life.

In CodeRunner, the world around you is the video game, which is a cool concept indeed. The game leverages your iOS device?s GPS capabilities and sends you on something of a make-believe scavenger hunt to real locations in your area. Once there, you?ll receive bits of story and information about your ?mission,? which is often to follow imaginary operatives and hack imaginary systems. It?s a great concept that lets you pretend to be a secret agent in a public place, without looking like a crazy person. CodeRunner is a very cool idea with a good sense of humor, high production values and a smile-inducing execution ? it?s kind of like playing with Nerf guns and other trappings of childhood.
Martian caves sprawl before you, diving deep into the crust of the red planet. You?re charged with exploring it in 2-D side-scroller Waking Mars, a platformer that allows you to navigate using a jetpack and your wits. In each stage of Waking Mars, you?ll need to solve puzzles by planting Martian seeds and spreading life. Waking Mars has a pretty interesting story, strong production values and lots of sci-fi cred to keep players exploring the depths of Earth?s nearest counterpart in the solar system.
The basic premise of AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! has players throwing themselves off buildings to score points. That?s already pretty cool. In each level you plummet at incredible speeds, using tilt controls to fly close to buildings and score points by grabbing ?score panels? along the way. And in each level, you?ll need to be careful to deploy your parachute at the right moment to avoid breaking bones as you finish each base jump. Formerly a PC title, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! works extremely well as an iOS title, leveraging tilt and touch controls and bringing a lot of high-speed impacts to players on the iPhone and iPad.
Aliens have killed off all humans except for you, and in a daring final stand with an energy cannon, you have to take down as many as you can. Ziggurat is pretty simple ? shoot aliens until they overwhelm you ? but it has a lot of cool little touches that make it a game you?ll keep coming back to. Aiming is done either in a slingshot fashion as in Angry Birds, or by sliding your finger along the bottom of the screen. The strength and speed of each shot is determined by how long you hold your finger down to charge it, which means you can?t just tap away madly. Instead, every shot counts, and the enemies move in some difficult-to-predict patterns that can make Ziggurat highly challenging. It?s tough, but you get to brag about your alien body count on Facebook and Twitter, and that definitely helps make up for it.
Puzzler Circadia makes great use of simplicity. Each level of the game is set on a black background with a simple mandate that has players attempting to time shockwaves as they cross the screen. Each level has a white dot on it and colored spots. Each colored spot releases a shockwave when tapped, and the color of the spot determines the speed at which it moves. The goal is to make the shockwaves hit the white dot at the same time by timing your taps on the screen. Levels get more and more complex with additional spots, moving white dots and other variables, but despite its simplicity, Circadia is an addictive and elegant title.
